Archery Scenarios

Come join us for archery at the War of Phoenix! This is a unique chance to enjoy archery all day, every day. There will be specialty shoots, tournaments, and classes happening throughout the event. Here’s what to expect and how to make the most of your archery experience!

Camping with Archery Gear

If you’re camping, be sure to pack your bow or crossbow in a case or bow bag to protect it. Keep your arrows and bolts dry and out of the weather. Store your gear in a safe spot in your tent to avoid it getting stepped on or wet. Some archers use a bowstand, but you can also use a simple 5-gallon bucket to lean your bow and quiver into keep them dry. Bring extra supplies like bowstrings, nock points, fletching glue, pliers, and other repair tools so you’re prepared if you need to fix anything during the event!

On the Range

Wear comfortable shoes, as the archery range can be rocky and dusty, even though it is mostly cleared of plants. We recommend bringing a chair and some shade since there won’t be seating, and tournaments can make for long days. Feel free to set up a pop-up tent at the range for shade! Don’t forget a hat, sunscreen, water, snacks, and a cooler for lunch to stay hydrated and energized throughout the day. And, of course, bring your bow and arrows!

What to Expect

Many shoots will be available for you to join at your convenience. When you arrive, check in with the marshal in charge so they can give you the rules and a scoresheet. There will usually be two or more marshals who oversee safety, open, and close the shooting line. Always follow the marshal’s instructions before going downrange and avoid distracting the marshal. When downrange, please be quick in scoring your points, pulling your arrows, and returning to the line to give everyone more time to shoot. Youth can shoot on both the youth and adult ranges, but they must always be accompanied by an adult to the line.

Youth and Loaner Equipment

Loaner equipment may be limited, so if you don’t have your own gear, contact your local barony’s captain of archers in advance to arrange for loaner equipment. Loaner equipment is available during classes for youth archery.

Special Shoots and Tournaments

Everyone is welcome to join in the fun! The targets for war are unique and often very creative, designed for different skill levels and shooting distances. However, if you don’t want to compete, you’re still welcome to shoot for fun! Check the schedule below for times of all the shoots. Also, after the last shoot on Saturday, volunteers to help pack up the range are always appreciated!
